Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen has officially launched the construction of a new bridge project across the Abay River in Amhara regional state.
Chief Administrator of the regional state, Temesgen Tiruneh, Minister of Transport, Dagmawit Moges, and other officials attended the launching ceremony.
That bridge will be built at a cost of 1.4 billion birr. The project is expected to take three years for completion.
The Chinese firm, China Communication Construction Company (CCCC), will undertake the construction of the bridge.
CCCC signed a deal with the Ethiopian Government to design and build the bridge last March.
The bridge will have a 21.5m width and the capacity to accommodate a three-lane carriageway, a bicycle path, and a walkway. The government of Ethiopia will cover the entire cost of the project.
Upon completion, it will replace the existing bridge.
