Ethiopia has deployed soldiers to subdue clashes in universities across the states of Oromia and Amhara.
The violence was sparked by the death of two students on Saturday at Woldiya University, in Amhara state, northern Ethiopia, following reports of confrontations between different ethnic groups.
At least 12 students are reported to have been injured.
The incident spread to other universities where students clashed along ethnic lines, with some then demanding to be returned to their home regions for safety reasons.
Ethiopia has seen an increase in ethnic-related violence in the past two years with more than two million people displaced in 2018, according to the United Nations.
Earlier this year, the northern Tigray state announced that it would not send students assigned to universities in neighboring Amhara state.
