Ethiopian student reportedly commits suicide in India

An Ethiopian student reportedly committed suicide in University town, Hyderabad, India, last Saturday, The Times of India an Indian English-language daily newspaper reports today.

According to the newspaper the student, a PhD scholar in the engineering department of Osmania University (OU), reportedly committed suicide by wrapping his face with a plastic cover at his room at Tarnaka. Though the incident probably happened on Saturday night, it came to light on Tuesday.

OU police said the incident took place in a hostel room at International Students’ Hostel, Tarnaka. Ethiopian Kalid Bali, 32, had been pursuing PhD at OU since April 2018.

On Saturday night, Kalid met his friend Lara. When Lara tried to reach Kalid on Sunday, Kalid was inaccessible over the phone. On Sunday night, when Lara went to Kalid’s hostel, the door was locked from inside and there was no response.

When the door was broke open, Kalid was found dead in the washroom with his face covered with a plastic cover. Kalid had been undergoing treatment for health problems.

Kalid recently visited Ethiopia and returned to the city in November last week. Police did not find any suicide note.
