The Ministry of Transport (MoT) today launched its first-ever trip planning digital map, aiming to improve public transportation in Ethiopia.
Pleased to officially launch the program of putting Ethiopia’s Transit on the Map, a soft launch of Ethiopia’s first ever trip planning app.The dev’t of innovative mobility solutions such as this app is the first step towards creating smarter, data driven mobility in Ethiopia, Dagmawit wrote on twitter.
Although the current public transport operation has a number of weaknesses, public transport has shown 9.3 growth annually.
There are limitations in fulfilling the public transport demand, and needed an urgent technology-based solution, said Dagmawit Moges Minister of Transport while speaking in a launching ceremony held at Hilton Hotel.
The growth of urbanization and the increase in the number of population lead for the emerging of new public transport routes, according to Dagmawit.
In order to address this problem, the ministry take experiences of Nairobi (Digital Matatus) and Cairo (Cairo Transportation) and create a digital map for Addis Ababa public transport, she added.
While developing the digital map of, the ministry has collaborated with Addis Ababa Transport burea, World Resource Institute and Addis Ababa University.
Digital maps of public transportation will provide better routing information to the system’s users.
