Do you know where the former U.S. Embassy was located in Addis Ababa in the 1930s?

The US embassy in Addis Ababa announces a new conservation project at the former residence of Ethiopian government official Fitawrari Habtegiorgis Dinagde, which also served as the American Embassy.

This building, considered one of the historical landmarks of Addis Ababa, is in the business district of Merkato and has maintained the name “American Gibi.”

It currently serves as part of the school facility for the Yemeni community. We are grateful to the Yemeni community for maintaining the building for over 70 years, the city government of Addis Ababa for protecting this landmark on its heritage list, and to World Monuments Fund for serving as the Embassy’s key implementing partner for this conservation project.

The U.S. Embassy’s support of the conservation of this building is part of its ongoing efforts to preserve cultural and historical heritage in Ethiopia. Stay tuned for more updates on this important restoration work.
